Meningitis (Bacterial) and Meningococcal Disease Update 2024 : NICE Guidelines

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has released an updated guideline on Meningitis (Bacterial) and Meningococcal Disease: Recognition, Diagnosis, and Management, published on 19 March 2024. This comprehensive guideline is designed to support healthcare professionals in identifying, diagnosing, and managing these serious infections across all age groups. By emphasizing early recognition and immediate treatment, the recommendations aim to significantly reduce the mortality and morbidity associated with bacterial meningitis and meningococcal disease.


Key Updates for Clinical Practice

  1. Extended Antibiotic Therapy for Meningitis with Endocarditis

    • For meningitis cases complicated by endocarditis, the guidelines recommend six weeks of antibiotic therapy for infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Group D Streptococcus, replacing the standard two-week regimen (Akahara, 2024).
    • This longer treatment period addresses the severity of endocarditis, which can lead to significant complications like respiratory failure and circulatory shock if not managed effectively (Raditya, 2024).
